From our scripture, we see Jesus demonstrate humility by honouring the dinner invitation of a Pharisee. Jesus did not see Himself as too great a man to dine with a Pharisee, but He went willingly. It is humility that takes people to a place of dignity in life. The Bible records that a woman known by everyone in the city as a sinner heard that Jesus was in the house of this Pharisee. The people judged and murmured amongst themselves… (Luke 5:32). Jesus said, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance”. She came to Jesus with an alabaster box, full of fragranced ointment. She stood at Jesus’ feet, wept and wiped the tears with her hair. She demonstrated a level of humility.
It is a turnoff for a Christian to wear a proud look. We must be very lowly at heart and spirit; we should always wear the garment of humility when we appear before our Maker. Jesus, while on earth, was a meek and lowly man. He detests a proud heart. A proud person cannot produce a lowly heart. A lowly heart is a heart of humility. Humility emanates from the heart. The lowly heart is humble. It is in eagerness to meet and know God and to be in God’s presence. A lowly heart is always ready in adoration to worship God.
A lowly heart is quick to repentance. Finally, a lowly heart trusts in God completely and is always in a thanksgiving mood. To be in God’s presence and be expectant are signs of a lowly heart. We should always approach God the way we are, simply, in the lowly state as a child wanting to receive from a father. We will need to open up our hearts in worship to God, show gratitude and express it through our acts.
