1 Corinthians 14:1 “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy”

Aside praying for your personal needs, it is imperative on you the believer to desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Desiring the gifts of the Spirit is one command that every believer needs to adhere to. Spiritual gifts are given by God to each believer and they are necessary for the spiritual growth of every believer. As a child of God, you have to make your physical growth go hand-in-hand with your spiritual growth. The prayer request of many Christians is always restricted to God blessing them with material needs and wealth. But Paul is telling us in today’s Bible passage to pursue love and desire spiritual gifts. When it comes to desiring spiritual gifts, it is something that you the believer should do so with all seriousness. The New International Version of the Bible puts it that “eagerly desire spiritual gifts”. When you are to eagerly desire for something, it means you should show keen interest in doing so. The spiritual gifts that you should desire are outlined in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10. Some of the spiritual gifts are healing, discernment, knowledge, miracles, faith, speaking in tongues, wisdom and prophecy. Now ask yourself the number of the spiritual gifts you have been blessed with and the ones you desire. I hope your prayer pattern will change from seeking personal or physical growth to desiring spiritual growth as well. The God we serve is Spirit and we can only serve Him in spirit and in truth. But in order to serve the Lord in spirit, you need to grow in the Spirit and the major way to grow in the Spirit is to desire spiritual gifts. It is the spiritual gifts that will enable you to grow in the Lord.
