Acts 19:1-7 (AMP)
“WHILE APOLLOS was in Corinth, Paul went through the upper inland districts and came down to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he asked them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed [on Jesus as the Christ]? And they said, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. And he asked, Into what [baptism] then were you baptized? They said, Into John’s baptism. And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, continually telling the people that they should believe in the One Who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus [having a conviction full of joyful trust that He is Christ, the Messiah, and being obedient to Him]. On hearing this they were baptized [again, this time] in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And as Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke in [foreign, unknown] tongues (languages) and prophesied. There were about twelve of them in all.”
It is my prayer that the Holy Spirit will come upon your life so mightily to empower you with the grace to be able to speak in tongues and to speak words of power in the mighty name of Jesus! According to the verses above, these disciples were saved, but they had not received the gift of the Holy Ghost. Immediately Paul knew this, he laid his hands on them and they were filled with the Holy Ghost, with the evidence of speaking in tongues, and prophesied as well. I want you to know that after you have been born again and become a child of God, there is another experience that God wants you to have; that experience is the baptism in the Holy Spirit. At new birth the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in you, making you a new creature, but according to the Bible, you get filled with the Holy Ghost when He comes upon you. That’s why Paul said to the disciples at Ephesus “have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?”
After you are born again, you must also be filled with the Holy Spirit. The infilling of the Holy Spirit is what is termed baptism in the Holy Ghost. When you study the Book of Acts very well, you will see that the early Christians got people filled with the Holy Ghost immediately they were saved. According to Acts 10:44-46, Cornelius and his household received the infilling of the Holy Ghost immediately they received the Good News. They received the infilling of the Holy Ghost immediately they were born again, with the evidence of speaking in tongues. They spoke in tongues when they were filled with the Holy Ghost. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you shall speak in tongues. The Early Church understood the role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, and as such they were always eager to minister Holy Ghost baptism to new believers. You must be filled with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. You cannot live a victorious Christian life without the Holy Spirit; because the Holy Spirit changes your heart and sanctifies you for God’s use. The Holy Spirit of God will change the state of your heart and sanctify you for God’s use.
The Holy Spirit is to a Christian what electricity power is to a household. You may have the best of electrical home appliances, but they will be of no benefit to you until they are powered with electricity. You have a lot of potentials in you as a child of God, but they are not brought into manifestation because you are not filled with the Holy Spirit; you are not powered with the Holy Spirit. That’s why I want to encourage you to be filled with the Holy Ghost, with the evidence of speaking in tongues. The believer without the infilling of the Holy Spirit is full of fear and excuses for not doing the will of God. The reason why you are so fearful is that you are not constantly filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will always reveal the will of God to you, and that’s what it means to prophesy. To prophesy means to reveal God’s will to the church; it also means to speak words of power. In Acts 19:2-6, when the believers were filled with the Holy Ghost, they spoke in tongues and they prophesied. Do you know why we have a lot of magicians in the church today? It’s because the Holy Spirit is not taught in our churches. You need the Holy Spirit to be able to manifest your full potentials.
